Indeed, the power of observation was what differentiated the designers at VW from those at Ford. Edsel's Great Great Grandfather was Henry Ford who founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Founder Ford was amous or introducing the Model T Ford in America in 1909.

The Model T was the first famous Ford car. Every car was black in color. When Mr. Ford was ready to introduce the newly designed Model A many senior executives in the Company were clamoring and saying that the public wanted some other colors than black.

It was about then that Mr. Ford is quoted as saying; They can have any color they want as long as it is black.

Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black. Source: Ford, My Life and Work, Chapter IV.

Mr. Ford had looked out over the American scene and observed the truth of the matter that people wanted a CAR and did not demand color.

The power of observation is, indeed, the most important ability any business executive can have. For the lack of that power are kingdoms, marriages and entire industries lost.
